Healthy gums play the vital role of providing a strong foundation for all dental treatment.

Gum Disease Overview
We all know the importance of cleaning our teeth and a good oral health regime but it’s easy to focus on our teeth and forget just how important our gums are.
At Devonshire House, our Specialist Periodontist Puneet Patel and our team of Hygienists, can help you cure your gingivitis and bring under control any periodontal (gum) disease affecting your teeth.
The signs and symptoms of Gingivitis and Periodontitis conditions vary from none at all, loose teeth and drifting teeth. Why 10-15% of us are susceptible to this more destructive condition is not fully understood.
Some of the major factors affecting periodontitis include smoking, specific strains of bacteria in the plaque, personal stress levels and family history.
Gum disease treatment depends on the severity of the condition and ranges from teaching you improved oral hygiene technique, to treatment under local anaesthetic for deep cleaning and elimination of infected gum tissue.

What Is
Gum (Periodontal) Disease?
Our gums cover the bones of our mouth, act as a barrier against infection and form a tight seal around our teeth to keep them in place so looking after them is key.
Periodontal (gum) disease is the umbrella term for unhealthy gums and most adults in the UK have experienced it to some degree at least once. Several studies have shown the link between periodontal disease and general health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer’s hence the importance of understanding the condition and seeking appropriate management. Periodontal disease can be categorised as gingivitis which is reversible or periodontitis.
Gingivitis, a common condition, is inflammation of the gum and can be resolved with good oral hygiene measures.
However, periodontitis, affecting 10-15% of the population, is a far more damaging inflammatory condition that destroys the supporting bone, eventually leading to tooth loss.
