Implant Treatment FAQs

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is composed of three components: a small titanium screw that is inserted into and fuses with the jawbone, an “abutment” or post which attaches to the implant, and a crown (in the case of one implant) that fits over the abutment to provide a natural looking tooth that functions well. Dental implants may be used to replace individual teeth, multiple teeth, or all your teeth in one or both arches. In the case of a full arch, 14 teeth may be supported by as few as four implants. What are Dental Implants

How do dental implants work?

A dental implant, whether it be metal or ceramic, is designed to replace a single tooth and is composed of three parts:
● the small titanium or ceramic screw that fuses into the jaw
● the abutment, which forms a small post protruding above the gum line
● the tooth shaped porcelain crown, providing a natural appearance

Dental implants are very reliable and have a success rate of 95%.

How much does an implant cost?

At Devonshire House a single dental implant and crown costs from £3,200 depending on complexity. Any additional implants and crowns start from £2,800 each. Before your procedure, you will be given a treatment plan detailing the full fee breakdown.

What does the dental implant procedure involve?

Placing an implant by one of our specialist implant dentists usually takes around 1 hour under local anaesthetic. Usually implants will need to heal for 3 months before a tooth can be fitted. However, in some circumstances, a temporary tooth can be fitted immediately.

You can have several implants placed at the same time. We can even provide you with a full set of new teeth with only 4 implants. This procedure is called Smile in a Day.

How painful is the dental implant procedure?

The dental implant procedure, as with any other oral surgical procedures, can give some discomfort. However this can be kept to a minimum with local anaesthesia. Sedation is also an option to help you relax. Most patients tell us that they were much more comfortable during and following the procedure than they had anticipated. We advise you to take life easy for a couple of days following surgery and to follow the advice in our post surgery guide.

What do I need to do after implant placement surgery?

As with any surgery there can be some discomfort following implant placement and it is normal to have some bruising and swelling in the the gum and soft tissues.

Read our guide below for detailed after care instructions

What to do after implant surgery?

How will I look after my implant?

Dental implant aftercare is extremely important. You will need to brush and floss your new teeth just as you do your natural teeth. We advise you see your hygienist every 4 to 6 months and they will demonstrate appropriate cleaning techniques. Looking after a dental implant is easy and we have a guide to dental implant aftercare to help you. As with natural teeth, you will need to visit your dentist and hygienist regularly for review and maintenance.

Please feel free to contact our Treatment Co-ordinator who will be happy to arrange an appointment to discuss any further questions. Call 01223 245266 or email tc@devonshirehousedental.co.uk

Dental Implants Aftercare Guide

What are the benefits of dental implants?
  • Implants are fixed in place and look and perform almost like natural teeth
  • Implants fit precisely without slipping or the need for adhesives
  • Implants preserve facial features, and restore a natural smile
  • Implants avoid damage to surrounding healthy teeth
  • Implants prevent loss of bone in the area of the missing teeth
  • Implants improve your appearance, your confidence, and your ability to eat the foods you like without worry about your teeth
  • Implant treatment can last a lifetime
How successful are dental implants?

With more than three decades of clinical experience and over a million patients treated worldwide, statistics confirm the success rate of 95% for single teeth and close to 100% for implant bridges using Nobel Biocare implants.

Are implants suitable for everybody?

Almost everyone that has lost a tooth, several teeth or even all of their teeth is a candidate for dental implants. There are very few situations in which implants are not suitable. We will assess your suitability before undergoing any treatment.

Am I too old to have implants?

Age is not a factor for dental implant success. Bone healing around dental implants occurs in patients from the 6th to the 10th decade of life with almost equal success as in younger patients. The only thing to stand in the way of dental implant treatment in the elderly is general medical health, your Devonshire House dentist can discuss this with you at your consultation.

Can I replace my dentures with implants?

Yes, you can and it will change your life. With dental implants you avoid the pain and embarrassment of dentures.

  • Your teeth will not slip or fall out
  • You won’t need to avoid any activities
  • You won’t need to worry about what you eat
  • There are no clasps, clips or plastic covering the top of your mouth
What are Metal-Free Implants?

Metal-free implants are tooth replacements that avoid metallic materials, offering a more natural look and potentially better biocompatibility than traditional titanium implants.

What are the specific benefits of ceramic implants?

Ceramic implants offer all of the functional benefits associated with titanium implants: reliability, high strength, excellent integration in the bone with the added benefits of being:

  • a metal-free alternative with excellent biocompatibility
  • the same colour as a natural tooth so will not shimmer through thin or recessed gums
  • an alternative implant solution for patients allergic to metal or with heightened gum sensitivity
Is the treatment and aftercare of metal-free implants different?

Implant treatment and aftercare is identical for metal and non-metal implants and our Specialist Prosthodontists will be able to talk you through both options and will advise you of the best solution to meet your individual needs.
