From drill to quill and trail running to tree poses

This week we caught up with Laura our new dentist to get to know her and explore her many passions both within dentistry and beyond the surgery. Read our blog and find out more about aspiring novelist Laura as she joins our team at our out of town Copley practice.

What made you decide to become a dentist?

I vividly remember sitting in the classroom and being asked by our tutor to finalise plans for the scheduled week of work experience. True to form, I still hadn’t decided what I wanted to do. I think, like most, I found it difficult at the age of 16 to make that decision. I found it quite overwhelming and honestly, I really didn’t know what I wanted to do. All I knew is that I enjoyed every aspect of school and thrived in education. A friend suggested I took up work experience at our family dental practice; and they offered to pay me, which was a bonus. Needless to say, I relished my work experience. I realised how my love of both science and art could be amalgamated and this felt exciting. It really was from that moment on that I knew it was something I could not only see myself pursuing but, find fulfilment and longevity in.

How did you end up in Cambridge?

Having spent five wholesome years studying in Newcastle, I made the decision to relocate to Cambridge after graduating to join my twin sister, who had been living in Cambridge for 12 months already, having pursued a career in medical research. Many of my friends had already relocated to London but, having grown up in Wales, ‘The Big Smoke’ seemed a little too daunting to me. I had become fond of Cambridge having visited my sister during my studies and it has been home now for 15 years (almost to the day).

How do you manage that work-life balance that we all strive for?

For me, getting outside is my therapy (and coffee). Whether it be walking in woodlands, going for a long trail run, enjoying an al fresco coffee by the river or climbing mountains; when time allows. I am yet to find a good hill to climb in Cambridge, any suggestions would be most welcome. I will also try and get to the East Coast as often as I can for some beach walks and wild swims ..and a healthy dose of Vitamin Sea.

Other than that, I have been practicing Yoga for circa 8 years and I am ambitiously completing my 200YTT; more so to deepen my knowledge and understanding as opposed to becoming a Yoga teacher. It is a somewhat selfish endeavour as I have benefited immensely from regular practice, and it is certainly something I endorse for overall health and wellbeing.

Is there something interesting about you that patients might not know?

I’m not sure they will find it interesting, but I am an aspiring novelist. I have always had a penchant for the arts and literature, and it has been a dream of mine for some time now to put pen to paper and write my own novel. It may take me a decade to finish the book, but I am enjoying the process nonetheless. I have, in fact, asked for a typewriter for my birthday. I feel it will make the experience a little more authentic, akin to Angela Lansbury in Murder, She Wrote (for all those who are old enough to remember).

As our chat came to an end the conversation naturally progressed back to Laura’s passion for dentistry and her new life at Devonshire House.

What is your favourite aspect of dentistry?

For me, it involves any aspect that makes my patient smile; as cliché as that may sound. It really is the most rewarding aspect of my job, to be able to restore someone’s smile. My favourite motto is this, ‘There are hundreds of languages around the world but a smile speaks them all’. Being an empath, my patient’s wellbeing is at the forefront of anything I do. I think, fundamentally, I chose to pursue a career as a dentist not only for the art and science but because I have an innate desire to help others.

It was lovely to get to know more about Laura and we are delighted to welcome her to our team at Devonshire House dental practice in Cambridge. We look forward to getting to know her more over the forthcoming months.
