Getting to know Denny, Dentistry and Beyond
Catching up with “Denny the Dentist” the newest member of the team at Devonshire House dental practice
From Prosthodontics to parenthood and performing to puppetry
This week we caught up with Denny our new dentist to explore his passions both within dentistry and beyond the surgery. On arrival Denny was deep in discussion with his dental nurse about the origin of his Christian name so it seemed like a great place to start.
Where does the name Denny come from?
When I was growing up at school in Hong Kong, it was common for teachers to ask us to choose an English Christian name to use alongside our Chinese ones. At the time I was about 12 and my pop idol was a singer named Danny Chan, so I decided to use that as a starting point and changed it to Denny to make it less common. Who would have known then that I was to become “Denny the Dentist”? My family always call me by my Chinese name Chon Pei, but I’m known as Denny to all my friends and work colleagues.
What made you choose dentistry as a career?
When it came to decision time after my A-Levels, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in either teaching or in the medical field, and in the end, I plumped for the medical route. I was the first one in my family to go University and the first dentist of the family. Interestingly, 2 years ago, I started my teaching career as Associate Clinical Lecturer (Prosthodontics) at UCL so it fulfilled my passion in both education and dentistry! The journey continues and I am very thrilled to announce that I have been recently appointed as an Honorary Assistant Professor for the University of Hong Kong as the recognition for my teaching and clinical work!
How are you finding Cambridge life?
Having just moved to Cambridge from East London I’m loving the family atmosphere, green space and slower pace that Cambridge life brings. We had already visited the colleges and Mathematical Bridge on our previous house hunting visits so we’re now looking forward to soaking up a little more of Cambridge life on a punt.
Tell us more about your family Denny both in the UK and Hong Kong
Well, I’m very excited as I am about to become a father. My partner and I are expecting a baby boy next month and we can’t wait for him to arrive. Both sets of grandparents are in Hong Kong, and they are already planning lots of visits and looking forward to their first trip to the UK and the patter of tiny feet.
What about life beyond the surgery, what do you like to do in you spare time?
I’m a keen sportsman and amateur musical performer, so I enjoy spending my free time on the handball court and the stage. When I lived in London, I played at Islington Handball club so I’m now on the lookout for a club local to Cambridge so that I can carry on playing. However, as a soon to be father, I think my recently learned puppetry skills from appearing in the musical Avenue Q are more likely to be in demand!
As our chat came to an end the conversation naturally progressed back to Denny’s passion for dentistry and his new life at Devonshire House.
What is your favourite aspect of dentistry?
My passion for providing high quality dental treatments with the emphasis on aesthetics and durability is my main drive. I am classically trained for conventional prosthodontics at UCL Eastman, and I teach smile design for specialist trainees – I believe I integrate both smile aesthetics and functionality well in my treatment approach. Seeing patients gaining smile improvement and confidence are truly rewarding to me. Above all, I’m really looking forward to building long term relationships with the patients and their families at Devonshire House to provide ongoing dental care.
It was lovely to get to know more about Denny and we are delighted to welcome him to our team at Devonshire House dental practice in Cambridge. We look forward to getting to know him and his new family over the forthcoming months.
